Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson’s disease, a progressive ailment, is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder primarily afflicting elderly individuals. Its onset is gradual, and its slow progression can lead to significant debilitation in later stages. Ayurveda refers to a related condition as ‘vepathu.’
This complex and largely hereditary disorder has an elusive origin, making it the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the general population. The disease’s trajectory and the degree of impairment experienced can vary substantially among individuals. While some individuals with Parkinson’s enjoy a relatively productive life, others experience more rapid disability. Premature mortality is often linked to complications like injuries from falls or pneumonia
Classification of Parkinson’s Disease
Primary or Idiopathic Parkinson’s Disease: The cause of idiopathic Parkinson’s is unknown. This form typically responds well to medications that enhance dopamine levels in the brain.
Secondary or Acquired Parkinson’s Disease: Secondary Parkinson’s has a known cause, often linked to medications that reduce dopaminergic activity.
Hereditary Parkinson’s Disease: This occurs when individuals inherit Parkinson’s-related genes from their parents.
Parkinson Plus Syndromes or Multiple System Degeneration: These are progressive neurological disorders caused by an overproduction of a brain protein, leading to nerve cell degeneration in multiple brain areas (multiple systems)

- Additional Symptoms: Some individuals may experience symptoms like lightheadedness, dizziness, constipation, urinary issues, muscle cramps, speech problems, and difficulty swallowing
